A hand-colored plate from Thomas Say’s American Entomology, published in the early nineteenth century. The composition presents the butterfly in two views, including one perched on a flowering stem, set against an open ground. Yellow wings marked with bold black bands are accented by touches of blue and orange near the hindwings, giving the plate both clarity and visual presence. Fine linework and restrained botanical detail preserve the measured character of early natural history illustration.
The balanced composition makes this work especially well suited to a grouping with other plates from the series.
Each Endicott & Co. print is carefully prepared from historical source material, with the character and detail of the original preserved in the restoration. The artwork is thoughtfully proportioned and offered in standard frame sizes for straightforward display.
Materials: Archival matte paper, 230 gsm
Sizes refer to the unframed artwork. Each print includes a built-in border for a clean, matted look. No additional mat is required. Standard frame sizes fit easily. Framing will add to the final dimensions.
Frames and interiors are shown for context only.
