Berenice Abbott’s photographs remain among the most enduring visual records of New York’s transformation in the early twentieth century. Created as part of her Changing New York project (1935–1939), and supported by the WPA’s Federal Art Project, these images document a city in transition, where historic streetscapes met emerging modern infrastructure.
Her work balances documentary precision with striking composition, capturing both the scale and everyday life of the city during the Great Depression era. Abbott photographed the Manhattan Bridge from its pedestrian walkway, capturing the dramatic geometry of steel cables and suspension towers stretching across the East River. The image emphasizes the powerful industrial rhythm of the bridge’s structure while framing the surrounding skyline through its latticework of cables.
