A hand-colored plate from Thomas Say’s American Entomology, published in the early nineteenth century. The composition presents two views of the butterfly against an open ground, allowing the form, wing structure, and distinctive blue coloration to remain the focus. Fine linework and subtle shifts in tone give the plate the clarity and delicacy associated with early natural history illustration.
The restrained composition also makes this work especially well suited to a grouping with other plates from the series.
Each Endicott & Co. print is carefully prepared from historical source material, with the character and detail of the original preserved in the restoration. The artwork is thoughtfully proportioned and offered in standard frame sizes for straightforward display.
Materials: Archival matte paper, 230 gsm
Sizes refer to the unframed artwork. Each print includes a built-in border for a clean, matted look. No additional mat is required. Standard frame sizes fit easily. Framing will add to the final dimensions.
Frames and interiors are shown for context only.
