Berenice Abbott’s photographs remain among the most enduring visual records of New York’s transformation in the early twentieth century. Created as part of her Changing New York project (1935–1939), and supported by the WPA’s Federal Art Project, these images document a city in transition, where historic streetscapes met emerging modern infrastructure.
Her work balances documentary precision with striking composition, capturing both the scale and everyday life of the city during the Great Depression era. This storefront on Bleecker Street captures the character of neighborhood commerce in Greenwich Village during the 1930s. Abbott’s photograph preserves the hand-painted signage and window displays typical of small New York businesses of the era, offering a glimpse into the everyday life of the city’s streets.
Each Endicott & Co. piece is meticulously prepared from rare historical source material and produced as an archival-quality print. Sizes are curated per artwork to preserve composition and image quality.
Materials: Satin-finish paper, 210 gsm
Sizes refer to the unframed artwork. Each print includes a built-in border for a clean, matted look. No additional mat is required. Standard frame sizes fit easily. Framing will add to the final dimensions.
Frames and interiors are shown for context only.
This print is reproduced from high-resolution archival scans preserved in The New York Public Library Digital Collections.
