Berenice Abbott’s Cheese Store, 276 Bleecker Street comes from her Changing New York project, which documented New York during a period of rapid urban change. Here, Abbott turns her attention to a neighborhood storefront in Greenwich Village, filling the frame with cheeses, hanging provisions, reflective glass, and hand-painted signs.
The close composition gives the photograph an almost tactile density while preserving the visual language of everyday commerce. Lettering, packaging, window display, and street reflection become part of the image’s structure, making the storefront both a record of place and a study in graphic detail.
Each Endicott & Co. print is carefully prepared from historical source material, with the character and detail of the original preserved in the restoration. The artwork is thoughtfully proportioned and offered in standard frame sizes for straightforward display.
Materials: Solid pinewood frame with a matte black finish and shatter-resistant plexiglass. Satin-finish photo paper, 260 gsm. Finished with a protective backing, pre-installed hanging hardware, and discreet rubber bumpers to protect the wall and keep the piece level.
Sizes refer to the artwork dimensions. The finished framed piece will be slightly larger.
Frames and interiors are shown for context only. Frame style and scale may vary slightly by size.
This print is reproduced from high-resolution archival scans preserved in The New York Public Library Digital Collections.
