Berenice Abbott’s Hell Gate Bridge, from Astoria comes from her Changing New York project, which documented New York during a period of rapid urban transformation. Abbott positions the bridge as the dominant form in the frame, its steel arch sweeping across the image while the river, shoreline, and a second bridge recede beneath it.
The composition balances structural weight with open space, emphasizing the bridge’s scale, repeating trusses, and strong silhouette. Seen from Astoria, the photograph turns a piece of transportation infrastructure into a study of proportion, geometry, and place.
Each Endicott & Co. print is carefully prepared from historical source material, with the character and detail of the original preserved in the restoration. The artwork is thoughtfully proportioned and offered in standard frame sizes for straightforward display.
Materials: Satin-finish paper, 210 gsm
Sizes refer to the unframed artwork. Each print includes a built-in border for a clean, matted look. No additional mat is required. Standard frame sizes fit easily. Framing will add to the final dimensions.
Frames and interiors are shown for context only.
This fine art print is reproduced from high-resolution archival scans preserved in The New York Public Library Digital Collections.
